I recent re-watched AOE and I liked it more than I remembered when I first saw it in theatre. Yes It is far from perfect, but definitely a fun movie with some memorable scenes and effects. I was less than keen on picking up yet another movie-verse Optimus, but I grabbed this guy on sale and was pleasantly surprised. That said, for reference, one of my favourite toys is ROTF Optimus Prime and I feel that AOE Prime is able to achieve the movie aesthetic without the complexity that causes my brain to hurt. Side note: I'm an idiot with transforming things. I can only guess that when Hasbro talked about simplified Transformers, they had me in mind; sorry for that.
Vehicle mode: Pretty standard movie verse Prime.
Pros: Chrome stacks, sturdy.
Cons: Boring! Yet another long nosed truck that looks remarkably similar to the last 3 versions of the same character. Looks cheap compared to the previous counterparts.
Robot mode: Good representation of the screen model.
Pros: Well articulated, satisfying transformation, nice sword, no electronics.
Cons: Shell former with random panels that don't really connect, (re: hip skirt, feet to lower leg portion), large backpack, awkward gun/shield, stupid unnecessary head popping gimmick. Alright, a EU character that I actually know. Starkiller, an awesome homage to an early draft name that later became Skywalker, is the lead character to the successful video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 & 2. For the most part I enjoyed 1 playing through 80% of it, but I left 2 to be played by my son who has way more patience for games. He liked it, but cleared it in an afternoon. The character is pretty interesting as I understand that he has an equal draw to the light and dark side of the force and the figure has accessories to compliment both 'sides'. Much like the other Black figures there is a decent amount of detail and good accessories, but still no hip joints to allow for more dynamic posing which I feel is essential to this toy and therefor overall disappointing.
Pros: First version of this figure? Appropriate accessories.
Cons: No ball jointed hips! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962770884958940124.post-14695489328847572072015-10-24T20:50:00.002-07:002015-10-24T20:50:27.982-07:00018 Thinkway Toys Pixar- Mr. Incredible. 018 Thinkway Toys Pixar- Mr. Incredible.

The Incredibles continues to be one of my favourite Pixar movies to date, so when I saw that these 6", articulated figures were coming out I was very excited. Overall I like it, but it certainly does not feel like a $25 toy. The plastic feels cheap and the toy has very little weight to it, but it's not evident by just looking at it. It comes with a decent stand and a decapitated arm that he used the movie to immobilize one of Syndrome's robot minions; a nice touch, but kinda meh IMO. I understand that Syndrome will be available soon, but I would love to see the rest of the cast, including Frozone.
Pros: good articulation, great likeness.
Cons: bit pricey, feels a bit cheap. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962770884958940124.post-57846133697066502832015-10-24T20:43:00.001-07:002015-10-24T20:43:15.917-07:00017 Hasbro Star Wars The Black Series- Darth Malgus017 Hasbro Star Wars The Black Series- Darth Malgus

Another character in the expanded universe that I'm not really familiar with, but he certainly looked interesting; I guess I'm a bit of a sucker for EU and random characters. This figure specifically has some faults in toy form though. Firstly, I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of ball joints on the hips. Full knee movement means nothing if the hips have no action. The other odd thing is with cloak. Yes it is a very nice addition, but I can't seam to figure out how to attach it to him so it looks natural. Overall I'm sure that EU fans love the opportunity to have him, but can't help but be a bit disappointed.
Pros: nice beefy figure, great sculpt, obscure character.
Cons: No ball joints on hips, limits poses. Odd inclusion of cloak that doesn't really fit well. Ok, I'm getting a bit back-logged so I'm going blitz through these new Infinity figures. I'll get back to more traditional figures soon, but these things have been on sale.
Rocket Raccoon: Really captures his bad ass, guns-a-blazing sculpt. Little big for my tastes and does not fit very well with the others GOTG figures, but I'm not so sure that scale was a big concern in the design.
Iron Fist: I hate the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon; it's terrible. I believe that this sculpt is taken from that design. However, I do not hate this figure; in fact, it's pretty great, so I'm torn. Also, what a crazy time in which we live; Iron Fist in figure form? Who would have guessed? Maybe that means I'm one step closer to have my beloved Sleepwalker toy that I have always wished for.

Big fan of these original designs and since I'm cheap I missed out of the NECA versions, but unfortunately these figures are a bit of a letdown. Sure the sculpt is bang on, but the articulation is weak considering the range that these guys should have from being ninjas and all. Probably the last TMNT figure that I will buy unless they drop the price of the revoltech figures, or they do another refresh of the brand.
Pros: Awesome look right out of the original comic.
Cons: no wrist swivels: makes for awkward poses. I already made my new found love for GOTG known in a previous post, so I will spare you the gushing again. But, I will take this moment to say how impressed I was with Dave Bautista's performance in the movie. Sure, it wasn't Shakespeare, but he held his own. Drax had a few of the laugh out loud moments in the film, but also could back it up with being a total bad ass. I do hope to see more of him in the sequel. The figure itself is stylized in the vein of all the Infinity figures. I'm very impressed with the how much personality flows through on this sculpt, it really looks amazing. I can not stress how awesome these figures are in terms of a cool representation of a character, regardless of the video game connection; these figures make perfect desk accoutrements and will have a place in my collection well after the video game is forgotten.
Pros: Awesome sculpt and representation, the base hides the "tech"
Cons: Like all Infinity figures this is a static figure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962770884958940124.post-89687553453700543012015-10-11T19:23:00.000-07:002015-10-11T19:23:44.996-07:00009 Bandai Big Hero 6 - (Marshmallow) Baymax. 009 Bandai Big Hero 6 - (Marshmallow) Baymax.

What can I say about Big Hero 6? It was a heartfelt movie with some wonderful and memorable characters. In my past review for Dusty (The Planes 2 toy) I mentioned that I was a Disney geek, so this movie was a bit of a no-brainer for me. Heck, I already like comics; add some Disney into the mix and i'm happy. The only bummer was that I felt BH6 was overshadowed by last years hit movie Frozen. The Disney community has taken a bit of a hard stance on Frozen lately (Think of how Transformers fan feel about Bumblebee) and while I really liked Frozen, I am more than Frozen-ed out. Overall I really love his Red Armour, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this version sporting his "non-intimidating", personal health care companion look; how could you not love this guy? He even comes with the "hairy baby" Mochi. With its success, including an Oscar, you have to believe that they are talking sequel, to which I'm kind of on the fence about. Sure I would love to see another big movie adventure, but i'm not so sure that another movie can capture the charm of the first. Honestly, I feel like a weekly cartoon television series would lend itself very well to the brand and the further development of the characters. They could even work in an Incredibles crossover.
Pros: Great look with the likeness being spot on. I loved that they included Mochi.
Cons: Limited articulation, Doesn't warm up.
Overall it is a nice representation of an excellent character who will enjoy much popularity over then next few years. Eight in and this is my first Transformer featured; crazy because I have more transformers to open than anything else. In any case I picked this guy up from Toys R Us when the rest of the first wave CW figures were released. I like these little figures as they are nice updates to the mini figures of Generation one, but compared to the other recently released Windcharger, it's a bit of a let down. I'm not sure what the execs at Hasbro are thinking, but this is not progress.
Pros: Nice transformation, decent alt mod.
Cons: No accessories, elbows limit poses, no head movement, inferior to the figure released 2 years ago.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962770884958940124.post-82582724744236330192015-10-11T19:08:00.000-07:002015-10-11T19:08:41.262-07:00007 Hasbro Star Wars - The Black Series - Bastila Shan007 Hasbro Star Wars The Black Series - Bastila Shan

Who? If that is what you first thought then you are not alone. I am a Star Wars fan, but apparently I'm not as big as I once was. Apparently the Jedi Bastila Shan was a supporting character in the Knights of the Old Republic Video games released in 2003 on the X-Box and PC (Thank you Wookiepedia). Not sure how I missed what seams like an awesome sounding game/story, but I guess my daughter was just a newborn that year, I had a Playstation and I was working two jobs so I didn't have time for computer games. Perhaps these excuses give me enough of an appeal for the revocation of my NERD card???
I started collecting toys in 1995 with the long sabre POTF figures and have my share of Star Wars toys. I continued through the prequels but quickly lost interest afterwards; how many Chewbacca's do you really need?(Four is the correct answer) And eventually moved on to Transformers and other collectibles. When the Star Wars, The Black Series figures were announced I was intrigued and started picking up characters from Ep 4-6 and the various extended universe figures.
Pros: Great sculpt, detail and articulation on the shoulders, elbows and knees. Honestly it's very surprising to have a toy of such an obscure female character; I wish they would do this more.
Cons: Brutal non-ball jointed hips, no interchangeable hands, lack of other accessories. How did Starkiller get so much stuff??
Anyways, I'm glad that Hasbro took the risk on this one; nice little figure and I hope they not only continue with the EU stuff, but making figures of the cool female characters in the Star Wars universe. Ok, first thing first, I have an unhealthy obsession with most things Disney. Sure, I loved the cartoons as a kid, but only recently have I fully embraced everything from the theme parks, the movies, comics and apparently now the toys. I also liked, probably more than some, the Pixar movie Cars and subsequently liked the movie from the same universes, Disney Animation's Planes. Regardless of it's formulaic plot and flat characters it's was still charming and provided some stunning visuals on the big screen and the same can be said about the sequel, Fire and Rescue. Typically speaking, I'm not a die-cast collector, but I saw this guy at the dollar store for $3 and figured why not. It's a basic die-cast vehicle, but is able to convey personality; must be the eyes... I guess you put eyes on anything and it somehow gains a soul, it's science!
Pros: Good likeness, personality and cheap!
Cons: Typical stagnant die cast vehicle.

I guess you could say that I was somewhat aware of GOTG prior to their explosive rise to stardom (pun intended??) but never thought Marvel Studios would make me a fan. The movie changed all that and since I have picked up most of the new books and took in all the other (limited) media available. While I like the Chris Pratt version of the character, I didn't want to make the investment in the 6'' Marvel Legends figures that would no doubt be required. When I saw this little guy I was convinced that he had to be mine. To be honest, I sort of like the look of this version better; more true to the comics and certainly a look more becoming of a "LORD OF STARS" than the space pirate featured in the movie. Maybe this costume will be featured in the sequel?
Pros: Great articulation, good price point, good likeness to source material.
Cons: Figure broke right out of the package. (Looks like they used a left shoulder joint for the right should and had to force the bicep in place casing the joint pin to crumble. Not wanting to deal with finding a new one, I just glued them together a called it good.)

As a kid growing up in the 80's the '66 series was always a bit of a mixed bag for me. On one hand it was a syndicated series devoted to comics during a time when there was very little to offer, but on the other hand it was extremely silly and not at all the dark, action packed world that Tim Burton would have eventually introduced us too. I don't recall the ep that this figure is based on, but with the release of the Blurays perhaps I'll get a chance to find it. All things considered, I felt that the absurdity of this figure was well worth the price.
Pros: Batman on a surfboard with surfing shorts, what else do you need?
Cons: A stand, allowing him to "hang ten" would have been nice, looks like the rest of the series may have been scrapped. Over 25 years Mario has been a iconic character and a staple in my life; with all the toys I have collected though the years it is crazy that it took so long to get a plastic version of him. I'll either chalk it up to Nintendo lacking the foresight and understanding that people love spending money on little plastic effigies of their childhood heroes, or maybe I just never noticed. In any case for 10 bucks this bad-boy was well worth the wait.
Pros: It's a nice representation of the figure as we have come to know him, decent articulation, great price!
Cons: Articulation is hindered by body and some poses are limited, would have been nice if he could hold his trademark mushroom? Bring a Disney fan I found it near impossible to not pass up these nifty little things. But are these figurines considered toys? Not trying to start a debate, but why wouldn't they? Sure there is no articulated and limited "play value" but seeing as all of my toys are posed on a shelf it's really the same difference. There is an added play value in that each one unlocks the character in the game, but I just like the look of them and will likely hold a place in my collection long after the games novelty is gone.
Pros: Great design, sculpt and pose. Unlocks a playable character in a game. Probably life size?
Cons: It's a statue, requires a considerable financial investment to play the character in the game and cannot actually help you fly.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962770884958940124.post-31464393882609637052015-10-11T16:40:00.000-07:002015-10-11T17:49:09.767-07:00001 DC Collectables - The New Adventures of Batman and Robin - BatmanCurrently I have a glut of toys that I have bought and not opened. Seeing as I am not a MISB collector I need to eventual open these suckers, but I find that I am rushing through it; not appreciating the toy. So I decided to take some simple pictures and post them with a small review. Nothing special, but still allows me to get more out of my collection.

When the announcement was made for these toys I was super exited as Batman TAS is my favourite cartoon and I have to say that I was not disappointed; this thing is awesome!
Pros: Great likeness, good articulation & awesome accessories
Cons: No breakage, but VERY fragile. Stand is nice, but does little to support poses. Not sure why Batman from the New Adventures was the part of the first release.
Overall, one of my favourite toys from the past year.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962770884958940124.post-21557989362696879342015-10-11T13:17:00.001-07:002015-10-11T13:17:31.276-07:00WelcomeBasically I review and take pictures of toys. If that is your thing, cool! If not, cool!
I'm not much of a photographer with basic equipment, but it does the job.
